About

Hi, I'm John. I build websites for small businesses that care about their brand.

I've been doing this freelance since 2017 — through high school, through two universities (University of Tulsa for computer science and applied math, then CU Boulder for a B.A. in economics with a focus on quantitative methods and game theory), and through a lot of learning what works and what doesn't for small business owners.

I work remotely from wherever I happen to be — right now I'm abroad. Most of my clients are in the U.S. The upside of the time difference: things get done overnight.

How I work.

I keep my client list small on purpose. When you hire me, you get me — not an agency, not a junior dev, not a ticket queue. You can text me.

I don't try to be everything to everyone. If what you need is a 500-page enterprise site with a dozen integrations and a six-month roadmap, you probably want an agency. If what you need is a site that actually represents your business, launched by someone who'll still be around when something breaks at 11pm on a Saturday, I'm your person.

What I build in.

  • WordPress — my primary stack, and where most of my clients live. Custom themes, custom blocks, and e-commerce/registration flows from scratch.
  • Astro and Next.js — for clients who want something custom-coded and fast. This site is built on Astro.
  • Webflow — when design speed matters more than back-end control.

Things I've done besides building websites.

  • Best Buy, Sales Associate (2018–2019) — Exceeded individual sales goals by 15% consistently. Trained new hires on POS and customer service.
  • The Persimmon Group, Video App Developer Intern & IT Research Intern (2019) — Shipped iOS software on multi-disciplinary teams. Reported weekly to executives.
  • The Persimmon Group, Content Manager (2016) — Content creation and distribution across organizational channels.

Side projects.

  • Crates With Love (2017–) — Built and ran a care-package business using economies of scale to lower costs for parents.
  • Dogs'n Hats (2019) — Led a non-profit that raised $600+ using photography to fund flights moving dogs from kill shelters to foster homes.

When I'm not working.

I travel, and I shoot nature and wildlife photography. Some of it lives on the photography page.
